For garages sales, I will start by looking on KSL.com the day before to look for sales in my area. Then it's best to set out a 8am. Any later and you may miss out! Then I keep to my area/neighborhoods looking for sales. (A keen eye was developed at an early age to spot those neon signs and addresses, though I'm still not as good as my mom! She's the master!)
Keep a list of things in mind (or on paper) that you are looking for in general (I'm always looking for children clothes and old picture frames) and things that may be tougher to find that you are needing/wanting to keep your eye out for the whole summer (we're looking for a corner desk big enough to fit our large printer, but small enough to fit in our space).
Sometimes things are bargains to begin with, and other times it's wise to offer a better price. Such as this teapot, I had a huge armful of things, and they were asking 4$ for it. My total came to 12 and she was okay with 10$.
Have change, because the owners usually run out, or are overwhelmed enough that they can't seem to count change correctly. I've been shorted on change before, and given too much. So Friday night when you're getting your groceries, get some quarters, ones and fives.
Garage sales can be wonderful, you can usually get a better price then going to the thrift store, because they just want to clean out and get rid of these things (most of the time, there are some people that want to clean out but are still too attached to there 'stuff' that they ask too much money, so beware!)
Other fabulous items I've found this summer, a huge wardrobe for my kids as they get old, they were selling great clothes in very good condition for 25 and 50 cents! I found a semi beat up tree, but is in a beautiful box, and the leaves just needed to be dusted and cleaned, cute power tool toys, Independence Day decorations, childrens books, heavy duty pot, Toy Story toys, and so much more!
